Ohio Valley Communities Set Memorial Day Observances

All across the Ohio Valley, groups will come together Monday to remember those who lost their lives in service to the United States as a member of the military. Below are some of the events that are scheduled for around the area:

∫ Wheeling’s American Legion Post 1 will rededicate the city’s “Spirit of the American Doughboy” monument at 2 p.m. Monday at Wheeling Park at the monument’s site near National Road.

∫ The McMechen Memorial Day parade will begin with a short flag raising ceremony in front of Center McMechen Elementary School at approximately 9 a.m. This will be followed by a parade to the McMechen Cemetery.

∫ Cameron’s American Legion Post 18 will host a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. in Veterans Park.

∫ The St. Clairsville American Legion will hold a Memorial Day program at 11 a.m. at Union Cemetery.

∫ The Follansbee American Legion Post 45 will hold a ceremony and unveil the post’s new fountain at 11 a.m.

∫ Weirton’s American Legion Post 10, will honor those who have served at 11 a.m. at the Weirton Steel Honor Roll Memorial near Three Springs Drive.

∫ Sally Buffalo Park will host a Memorial Day event at 1 p.m. Saturday with a flag raising ceremony, followed by a bicycle parade at 3 p.m. with the lineup at 2:30 p.m. by the office. A golf cart parade will be held at 5 p.m. with a lineup at 4:30 p.m. There will be live entertainment by Code Red 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

∫ A service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Union Cemetery in Cadiz, 274 Charleston, with everyone invited to the Cadiz American Legion at 336 E. Spring St, Cadiz, for lunch afterward.

Barnesville will host a Memorial Day breakfast at the Barnesville Elks Lodge 1699 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. May 31. The price is $7. It is open to the public and admission is free to veterans. For more information, call 740-425-9181.

∫ The Barnesville American Legion will hold Memorial Day Services at the memorial plaza at 11 a.m.

The parade will begin at 10:45 at the Dairy Queen and will arrive at the plaza where we will have guest speakers, a special military tribute, and 21-gun salute.

∫ The Village of Belmont will hold its annual Memorial Day parade at 10 a.m. May 31. Lineup will be 9 a.m. in front of the old school.

∫ Bethesda will hold a parade at 11 a.m. with lineup 10:30 a.m. at Lake and Virginia Streets behind the Bethesda Market. The parade will travel through town to the plaza for the service.

∫ Flushing’s Rock Hill Cemetery will host a ceremony at 1 p.m. The American Legion Riders Post 366 will conduct the ceremony.

∫ Memorial Day services will return at the Honor Corner near the fire station in Barton at 10 a.m. Monday, May 31. There will be a program and speaker lasting about 30 minutes.
