WHEELING — Area runners and walkers are again challenged to participate in the second Virtual 5K Walk-Run hosted by Elmhurst, The House of Friendship nonprofit assisted living residence for older adults in Wheeling.
The 2021 “Planning for Our Future” fundraiser is historic Elmhurst’s summer event, replacing a planned outdoor steak fry on the lawn that was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Jamie Crow, executive director.
“The response to last year’s race was wonderful. We had 50 runners and walkers,” Crow said. “Our summer events have always been popular, and have provided us support since our founding in 1890.”
She said although the COVID-19 vaccine has made much of the country’s population safer, the organization decided to err on the side of caution and host the virtual race again.
“Continuing the quality care we provide to the men and women who call Elmhurst home is our top priority,” Crow noted. “Maintaining our campus buildings and grounds is a huge undertaking annually. Monies generated by our fundraisers and annual Thanksgiving Appeal are extremely important in sustaining our mission and legacy in service to the community.”
Crow said Elmhurst is encouraging families and friends, as well as die-hard racers, to register together to walk or run the race over the summer months.
“The pandemic put a damper on our usual events, but I am encouraged by the continued support from our friends, far and wide, during the past year. We’re hoping that next year will see us party on the lawn at Elmhurst. Until then, please join us for some fresh air and exercise at our 5K,” Crow said.
Race participants will receive a T-shirt, bib number, and a finisher’s medal. The race will run now through Sept. 18. To register, go to rsracing.enmotive.com and click on Elmhurst.
Elmhurst is located at 1228 National Road.
