North Wheeling Dream Center Getting New Sprinkler System

Work continues to renovate Bethlehem Apostolic Temple’s North Wheeling Dream Center.

The North Wheeling Dream Center is about to get a fire sprinkler upgrade after more than half a century.

The Rev. Darrell Cummings of the Bethlehem Apostolic Temple said the church has signed a contract with Brewer and Co. of Morgantown to install the sprinklers, and is waiting for the company to begin.

Employees with the company are presently designing where the sprinklers should be placed in the building, which consists of four floors and 35,000 square feet.

The Dream Center is located at 407 Main St. in North Wheeling. It hasn’t had new sprinklers in more than 50 years, and the cost for the new system has been set at $105,000, according to Cummings.

“They are not only doing repairs, but updates to bring them up to today’s standards,” he said.

Once the sprinkler system is in place, the church will move on to other projects needed at the Dream Center before the building can become a vital part of the community.

The building next needs a new furnace, then new piping for its bathrooms. Flooring needs replaced, as do ceilings, according to Cummings

The Dream Center’s roof is in six sections, and two of those so far have been repaired.

“We’ll be thankful to be done with the exterior before winter. I don’t know if that will happen, but we are going to try,” Cummings said.

The Dream Center has apartments within it, but they are not in livable condition at this time, he said.

“We have to do everything to them,” Cummings said. “You can just see through the walls.”

The Dream Center serves as the base for Bethlehem Apostolic’s outreach efforts to the community — most notably its food distribution efforts at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Cummings’ goal is to eventually have a mixture of residential and business tenants in the building. In the past, the Dream Center has been the home for social service organizations, such as those serving veterans and domestic violence victims. Those tenants relocated as the ceilings in their offices began to leak water.

Cummings said he hopes eventually to have a daycare center in the Dream Center.

“We’re thankful for the support we’ve received so far,” he said. “We’ve come a long way, and with God’s help we’ll make it.”
