Wheeling Man Killed in U.S. 250 Accident Outside Bridgeport

Photo by Carri Graham - First responders work to clear the scene Wednesday afternoon after an excavator being hauled by a truck tipped over onto a van along U.S. 250 in Sunset Heights, killing the driver of the van.

One person was killed when a load being pulled by a truck rolled over onto a van along U.S. 250 in the Sunset Heights area outside Bridgeport on Wednesday.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol St. Clairsville Post is investigating the crash that occurred around 10 a.m. near milepost 7 in Pease Township. According to the patrol, Antonio Joseph Michael Cunningham Miller, 29, of Bridgeport was operating a 2007 International dump truck and trailer loaded with an excavator. He was traveling east on U.S. 250.

Miller was negotiating a turn when the trailer and excavator overturned into the westbound lane, striking a 2015 Dodge van driven by 55-year-old John Santimarino Jr. of Wheeling.

Santimarino was pronounced dead at the scene. An unidentified passenger in the van was transported to WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital in critical condition.

Additional details of the crash remain under investigation.

The accident left U.S. 250 closed from Bridgeport to Chermont Road for several hours. The Ohio Department of Transportation announced that the road had reopened around 5:30 p.m.

Along with the patrol, the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office, Bridgeport Police Department, Martins Ferry Police Department, Colerain Fire Department, Bridgeport Fire Department, Barton Fire Department, Sunset Heights Fire Department, Ohio Department of Transportation, Belmont County Emergency Management Agency and Belmont County Coroner’s Office assisted at the scene.
