Highlands Sports Complex Hopes To Build on Good Year

File Photo - After a bounceback year following COVID-19 difficulties, The Highlands Sports Complex continues to look for ways to bring in new revenue.

The Highlands Sports Complex is looking to build on the number of tournaments, birthday parties and facilities rentals already happening there.

Harvey Greenidge, general manager at the sports complex, updated Ohio County Development Authority members Thursday on his plans at the facility.

Finances at the sports complex “look good” for the current fiscal year, Greenidge said. He then proceeded to tell the authority how he hopes to improve for next year and bring in more revenue.

“We’re looking to bring additional tournaments into the facility,” Greenidge said. “There were weeks when we didn’t have tournaments, then there were weeks when we had two tournaments going on. We were filling up weekends, so we had two tournaments.”

But the next move for the complex might just be to step outside of sports, he continued.

Greenidge said there are possibilities for expos and charitable walks at the sports complex, and these could financially benefit the facility.

“Birthday parties — we’re going to continue growing that area,” he added. “It’s been a great area of revenue for us. We’re doing a lot of birthday parties, and we want to make sure we don’t go stale and stagnant in that area.

“We’re going to introduce new birthday party packages so we can continue that revenue flow there, as well.”

The climbing wall at the sports complex also has been a successful feature, and Greenidge suggested the idea of starting a climbing club there.

“We’re also looking to build up our local collaborations,” he added. “Hopefully, we’ll get off the ground next year with the YWCA and the summer camps we wanted to do this year.”

The sports complex also is working closely with Wheeling Parks and Recreation on a basketball program, and is looking to do more with the YWCA in the coming months, according to Greenidge.

The facility also plans to invite more local schools to come for field trips and events there, he continued.

“We had a big surge in May with schools coming out, and we will try to expand that to year-round,” Greenidge said.

There soon also will be a “pro shop” at the facility where sports complex employees will print the T-shirts needed for tournaments in-house. The needed press has been ordered, and now a vendor of blank t-shirts is needed, he said.

“That’s another source of revenue we’re going to start next year,” Greenidge told members. “Instead of these tournaments bringing in a third-party vendor, we’re going to take that over ourselves.”
