Attempted Murder, Attempted Burglary Trial Set Sept. 12 in Monroe County

A Powhatan Point resident charged with attempted burglary and attempted murder will head to trial next month.

Aaron Hulbert, 42, appeared in Monroe County Court for a pretrial hearing Monday. Prosecutor James Peters said Hulbert did not enter a plea agreement at the hearing.

“There was some indication that he may enter a plea but he did not enter a plea,” Peters said.

A jury trial is set to begin Sept. 12.

“Every defendant has the right to have a trial, and that’s what he decided to do,” Peters said.

The charges stem from an incident that occured in October. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Woodsfield Police Department responded to reports of a naked man causing a disturbance around Holstein Road in Center Township, where a suspected arson fire had occurred the previous day. As law enforcement searched the area, Hulbert allegedly jumped up in an ambush attack brandishing a homemade spear and was shot by an officer.

He was transported to a hospital for treatment before being taken to jail.

Peters said he believes Hulbert was shot twice with one bullet grazing his arm and the other landing in his leg. Peters said the incident was determined to be a justified shooting.

Hulbert, who has been in custody since his October arrest, remains lodged in the Monroe County Jail.

Peters also gave an update on a Woodsfield man charged with two counts of aggravated murder. He said that 38-year-old Jacob Wilson will have a competency hearing on Sept. 20. How the case proceeds from there will depend upon the outcome of the hearing, Peters said.

Wilson is charged with the murder of 24-year-old Daniel E. Franzoi of Beallsville and of 20-year-old Malakai Devon Curry of Caldwell. Wilson allegedly shot both men to death Oct. 30 outside the Wilson Farm just off of Ohio 26 on Wilson Lane in Woodsfield.

Wilson entered a plea of innocent by reason of insanity in late November.
