‘Centennial Gala’ Planned Dec. 7 at Wheeling Park’s White Palace

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to include presenting sponsor Expand Energy and a gala committee member which had inadvertently been left off the initial sponsor list.

The Oglebay Foundation invites the public to come celebrate nearly a century of history and tradition at Wheeling Park next month.

A “Centennial Gala” will take place from 6-11 p.m. Dec. 7 at the White Palace and will feature gourmet dining, live entertainment and a festive atmosphere that aims to transport guests through a century of history.

On December 24, 1924, more than 170 community leaders answered the call of W.E. Stone, raising the money needed to save Wheeling Park from developers. The Intelligencer’s headline that day read, “Santa Presents Wheeling Park to City,” and the park was preserved for future generations.

Now, almost 100 years later, the park’s historic legacy will be celebrated with a glamorous event that takes guests back to the 1920s. Guests will enjoy classic cocktails like the Old Fashioned, Sidecar and French 75, along with a selection of hors d’oeuvres including crab cakes and tenderloin crostini. The former teen dance floor will be converted into a 1960s-style lounge, featuring both whiskey and sparkling wine tasting bars, additional appetizers, a full-service bar and live jazz entertainment.

Upstairs, a Winter Wonderland will await guests, featuring an array of dinner stations offering salmon, beef tenderloin and other festive favorites. The evening will culminate with a performance from The Celebrity Allstars Band featuring former members of bands and performers such as Earth, Wind & Fire, The Eagles, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Janet Jackson, Kenny Loggins, Bette Midler, Mariah Carey and Garth Brooks. The band will keep the party going with hits from the ’80s, ’90s, Motown, pop, and classic rock eras.

Proceeds from the event will support the continued beautification of Wheeling Park — including improvements to the Frank Rock Garden, the planting of 100 trees to commemorate the park’s centennial, parking lot paving and enhancements, new signage and wayfinding, and a new public art installation.

Funds will also support a year-long activation of the park with additional public events including a community picnic, historic exhibits and park tours, and a teen dance revival.

The event would not be possible without the support of the following sponsors:

Presenting sponsors Judge and Mrs. Frederick Stamp, WesBanco, and Expand Energy; Centennial sponsors Hazlett Burt & Watson Inc., The Health Plan, Joyce Jefferson and Bill Jones, McKinley Architecture Engineering, McKinley Carter Wealth Services, Panhandle Cleaning & Restoration, and Security National Trust; Patron sponsors Peter, Walker & Murphy Holloway, Holly and Kim McCluskey, Mills Group, Cheryl and Chris Riley, Riverbridge, Raymond James, WVU Medicine and additional support from Duplaga’s Top Notch Landscaping, Hughes Design & Gift Gallery, Eventioneers and All Occasions Party Rental.
