Thousands Without Power After Storms Hit Region

More than 3,500 homes in Wheeling and surrounding areas faced power outages after an unexpected wind storm ripped through the Ohio Valley Sunday evening.

According to Ohio County Emergency Management Director Lou Vargo, AEP reported that there are around 1,900 homes without power in the Oakmont area and around 430 on Wheeling Island.

There were around another 1,340 outages in the Fulton area. AEP expected the Fulton area homes would get power back around 11 p.m. Vargo said 2:30 a.m. Monday was the earliest time predicted for all impacted homes to have restored power.

The storm also took out a section of roof on the Highlands Sheetz on Cabela Drive. No one was injured, according to employees. The loose section of roof is surrounded by caution tape and safety cones, some of which had blown over from the continued strong winds.
