W.Va. Tax Season Starts Quietly Despite Changes

WHEELING – State tax season in West Virginia is now underway with motorists driving through their tax filings with hopes of recapturing the money they paid out in vehicle property tax last year.

Residents should have received their MV-1 letters from the state telling them how much of a rebate they are eligible for, and providing them a tax credit number to enter on their tax forms. Those who haven’t yet received their MV-1 letter. by mail may retrieve it online by going to mytaxes.wvtax.gov.

So far, there haven’t been all that many questions coming from taxpayers, noted Ohio County Assessor Tiffany Hoffman.

“I’m always bashing the state, but I think they’ve actually done a pretty good job with this,” she said. “They seem to know what they’re doing. … You know me. If they were doing it wrong, I would be telling you.

“We really haven’t gotten many calls, and I’m surprised.”

What mistakes are happening with the MV-1 letters is that many aren’t listing the correct type of vehicle owned by the taxpayer, or its correct year or make.

The State Division of Taxation has informed Hoffman and other county auditors that that information really doesn’t matter so long as the amount of tax listed as paid by the vehicle owner is correct, she said.

If the taxpayer wants to have that information corrected, they may contact the state to find out how to do so but it won’t affect the amount of their return.

Those with questions pertaining to their state taxes may call (304) 558-3333 or (800) 982-8297 to speak with a live taxpayer representative, or email taxhelp@wv.gov.

Many questions can also be answered at tax.wv.gov.

“I think the state has taken its time and figured this out,” Hoffman said. “It’s still a mess. But it’s better than I thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be miserable.”
