A 13-year-old from Burgettstown is dead after drowning in the Ohio River near the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Weirton Monday night.

According to the Weirton Police Department, the Brooke County 911 Center received a call Monday concerning the juvenile swimming in the river and being swept away by the current.

She had been swimming with family members near the bridge, reports indicate.

Weirton Police Patrolman Adam Mortimer arrived at the scene within minutes of the call, entering the water and bringing her back to the shore, where life-saving measures were taken before transporting her to WVU Medicine Weirton Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
