WHEELING — A Wheeling husband and wife are sharing the love of a dish they have made since high school with the rest of the Ohio Valley.

Brian Campbell and Sami LaBelle will host a one-day pop-up of their new smoothie bowl company, LaBowls, from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday at Table 304 on Main Street in Wheeling. It is the first step of what they hope will be several pop-up stops and, eventually, a brick-and-mortar restaurant in 2026.

LaBelle has been making smoothie bowls since she and Campbell were students at Wheeling Central Catholic High School. Campbell remembers the first bowl LaBelle ever made him — the PB&J bowl that will be part of the menu today.

Smoothie bowls are much like regular smoothies, LaBelle said, but with a thicker consistency and adorned with different toppings like fruit and granola.

It was when LaBelle went to PA school in Savannah, Georgia, that the seeds of turning those bowls into a business began to sprout.

“We saw all the small businesses down there and thought, what a cool thing to bring back to Wheeling,” she said. “When I came back here from PA school, there were small businesses all over the place. Table 304 was here, Rachel’s on 16th was here, Sarah’s on Main was here.

“So it’s exciting to also bring something to the area, too.”

Today’s pop-up will feature some of LaBelle’s recipes, as well as a build-your-own-bowl option. There will be healthy topping options like fruits and granola, but also some fun choices like marshmallow fluff and Nutella.

The menu will expand as the pop-ups progress, with new recipes and seasonal bowls, as well as regular smoothies and juices. When they finally open their own shop, they hope to expand to items like avocado toast and almond butter toast.

The two feel they make a good team – with LaBelle focused on the recipes and Campbell focused on the business side. They’re both excited and nervous for their maiden voyage. Campbell said he’s been having flashbacks to his days as a West Liberty University baseball player and how it felt the night before a game.

“Last night was a little weird,” he said. “I woke up a couple of times in the night and it felt like I had a game today. It felt like, did you prepare enough? Are you ready to play? Knowing we did prepare properly and we have a good product to put out to people this weekend, it’s going to be really cool.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
