Man Accused of Shooting 2-Year-Old in Steubenville Remains at Large

STEUBENVILLE — City police are continuing to search for a man who they said they believe shot a 2-year-old girl and her mother while they were in a vehicle Monday afternoon.

Police said Brylee West, 18, of Steubenville, is suspected of the shooting in the 1400 block of Ridge Avenue around 4:46 p.m. The 2-year-old girl was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. The mother, Mahogany A. Luke, 27, of Steubenville, was taken by ambulance to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment of bullet wounds to the leg and stomach area.

Police said West is 5-feet, 7-inches tall and weighs around 150 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes, reports said. He turned 18 less than two weeks ago.

A charge of attempted murder has been filed against West in municipal court.

Police reported images taken from crime cameras in the area show the vehicle Luke was driving past Maryland Market on Maryland Avenue. West, who was talking to another man, took off running in between houses. He is then seen cutting her off in the 1400 block of Ridge Avenue, police reported.

West had been released recently from an Ohio Department of Youth Services detention facility where he had been sent after shooting another teen in the 100 block of North Fourth Street on July 25, 2015.

He was sentenced by Jefferson County Juvenile Judge Joseph Corabi in November 2015 to three years in a state detention center.

West’s charges included felonious assault, with a firearm specification, carrying a concealed weapon and tampering with evidence.

Fred Abdalla Jr., juvenile court chief probation officer, said West is still on parole.

The issue of gangs was raised during the hearings for West.

West was seen Thursday in the courtroom when Kylar Petteway, 16, was sentenced by Jefferson County Common Pleas Court Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. to 12 years in an adult prison in connection with the shooting of three females on Jan. 12.

Petteway pleaded guilty to five counts of attempted murder and five counts of felonious assault, with firearm specifications and specifications the shooting was gang related, and tampering with evidence for hiding the gun.

Three females were shot from a moving vehicle in the 200 block of North Seventh Street. Two males, who were believed to be the intended targets, were with the females and were not injured.

Steubenville police believe Petteway was shooting at rival gang members. He was charged in juvenile court but Corabi ordered in June the case be sent to the adult division.
