Powhatan Point Holds Christmas Festival

POWHATAN POINT — People spent time Saturday getting ready for holiday festivities during the 13th annual Christmas In The Village in Powhatan Point.

Children had the chance to start their morning by enjoying a pancake breakfast with Santa. After meeting the jolly old elf, those youngsters had the opportunity to go over to the Kid’s Zone, where inflatable bounce houses, balloon animals, pony rides and face painters were offered. Capes and Tiaras, a fantasy birthday party and banquet hall business based in Bellaire, was represented at the event with people dressed up as Paw Patrol characters for children to meet.

Laurie Waltz, 4, of Shadyside said her favorite part of the day was jumping on the inflatables.

“It’s cold, but Mommy bundled me up so I can play,” Waltz said. “I keep going again and again on the bouncy houses. It’s a lot of fun, and I saw one of my friends.”

A Veterans Day memorial ceremony was conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5565 and American Legion Post 228. Mark McVey was the main speaker at the ceremony and was joined by the Rev. William Coker, legion Chaplain Duane Brauge, Mayor Jeff Haught and Jeff Brown.

The national anthem was performed by Sydney Boltz. At St. John Vianney Hall, food was offered by St. John Central School, along with a musical act by Joseph Mastracci.

Craft vendors set up their stands and sold their wares throughout the day. Many offered decorations for people to get into the Christmas spirit. Village resident Joan Smith said she loves coming to Christmas In The Village to check out the different crafts.

“I have probably spent more today than I’d like to, but I love all of this. I am going to be decorating soon for Christmas, so this is all perfect for what I want,” Smith said. “Decorating for Christmas is one of my favorite things to do.”

There were also numerous food stands available where people could get a bite to eat. They included businesses such as Max’s Concession, G&B Concessions, Domino’s, Undo’s and Cumberland Trail Kettlecorn and Mini Donuts. A raffle for a handmade quit by Audrey Ramsey also took place with Yard Decor and More sponsoring the drawing.

During the evening, an EMS and fire department parade was held with trophies awarded to: best appearing engine, best commercial float, best marching unit, oldest fire engine in service, best appearing squad, best non-commercial float, longest distance traveled, and department’s choice. Businesses, church groups, marching bands and various organizations were invited to participate in the parade.

Other businesses and organizations that participated in Christmas In The Village included: D.J. Daner, Sarah’s Archery, Bentley Chiropractor, Hank’s Place, Shreff’s Hometown BBQ, Fras Auto and HD Truck Parts, Blossoms and Bows, Powhatan Senior Center, Riverside Restaurant, McNear True Value, Church of the Nazerene, Perfect Pasta by Amy Adams, Tom’s Carryout, Powhatan Library, Church of God, and Brubakers Gro and Service.

This event was sponsored by Powhatan Captina Order of Eastern Stars and was held at the Masonic Hall.
