Tough as Nails Urban Challenge: Awesome Event, Participants Say

WHEELING — It is, without a doubt, the top new event Wheeling has seen in years, many of those participating in the inaugural Tough as Nails Urban Challenge said Sunday afternoon.

The 6-mile, 20-obstacle challenge took participants from downtown through Center Wheeling and East Wheeling then up to Wheeling Heights. Along the way there was climbing, jumping, wall-scaling and carrying buckets of nails.

As one participant in the Bucket ‘O Nails challenge said, “In a Spartan Race, they only make us carry one bucket.”

A female competitor responded, “Then just carry one bucket, make two laps and stop complaining.”

At the end, everyone agreed the Stairway to Heaven challenge, sponsored by Dr. Fritz Braunlich, was the toughest of them all. Coming at mile 4, the climb up 400 stairs humbled even the fittest of competitors. A common question/exclamation upon reaching the landing at Lind and Cherry streets: “There’s more stairs?!?”

The Tunnel Vision challenge also pushed participants to the limit, as the 6-foot wall that had to be scaled was too much for many competitors. It took plenty of teamwork for most to conquer the wall.

More than 650 people competed in the inaugural event, which was sponsored by the Ogden Newspapers and The Health Plan of West Virginia.
