Girl Injured in Shooting in Steubenville Dies

STEUBENVILLE — A 3-year-old girl who suffered a traumatic brain injury in a September shooting in Steubenville died Saturday, according to authorities.

Brylee West, 18, of Steubenville, was charged in connection with the shooting of a mother and her daughter on Sept. 24.

Mahogany A. Luke, 27, of Steubenville, was driving with her daughter, Sa’Raija Watson, inside the vehicle in the 1400 block of Ridge Avenue when City Police said West opened fire on the vehicle.

Luke and her daughter were both struck by bullets, according to police. The vehicle was hit with more than 10 bullets, police reported.

West was indicted in October on two counts each of attempted murder and felonious assault, each with a firearm specification, and one count of having a firearm while under disability.

Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin said Watson was taken to the hospital and died on Saturday.

“We need an autopsy to determine a cause of death. We don’t know if she died from complications associated with the shooting. The autopsy will determine if it affects the charges against (West),” she said.

Police reported images taken from crime cameras in the area show the vehicle Luke was driving going past Maryland Market on Maryland Avenue. West, who was talking to another man, then began running between houses. West is then seen cutting Luke off in the 1400 block of Ridge Avenue, police reported.
