Made In The Shade Finds ‘Brighter’ Location
TRIADELPHIA — When COVID-19 began to spread across the country, local businesses faced unexpected setbacks and challenges. For Sandy Russell, owner of Made In the Shade, this came in the form of a notice of termination from her shop’s landlord in June.
“I was totally blind-sided,” Russell said.
The car window tinting service had closed its doors in late March, despite technically being considered an essential business. Russell, who has cancer, said she was concerned for her own health as well as the safety of her employees and customers.
The termination notice meant the business would have to find a new location immediately. Russell’s brother helped her find a place less than 48 hours after receiving the notice.
For Russell, this unexpected change was quickly revealed to be a blessing in disguise. The new shop, located in Triadelphia at 3637 National Road, was one she had been eyeing for years but had never been available before.
“As soon as we got there, I knew this place was perfect,” Russell said.
Made In the Shade recently reopened, and customers who had been backlogged since late March have provided “the best July we’ve had in six years,” Russell said.
“Customers also really like the new location,” she said. “It’s brighter and more inviting.”
The business, which Russell described as a “one-stop-shop” for window tinting and stereo services and auto accessory installation, has now fully booked appointments through Aug. 16. The new location has also provided more foot traffic, giving her more opportunities to reach new clients.
Russell said that after the success the business has enjoyed since its reopening, she feels confident that if it has to close again, the business will survive.
“Small businesses are all in the same boat right now, just trying to get through every day,” she said. “But I know my customers will be there for me, as they always have been in the past.”
