WHEELING – The Wheeling Fire Department is investigating the cause of a fire reported just after 10 p.m. Monday at 37 S. Penn St. on Wheeling Island that produced smoke visible in the downtown area. Fire department spokesman Philip Stahl said the first crews on scene encountered heavy fire on the upper floors of the structure, prompting a full response from the department. No one was injured, Stahl said, adding the structure is believed to be vacant. The blaze was under control by about 11:30 p.m., but Stahl expected crews to be on scene throughout the night.
