Wheeling Water Crews Deal With a Tough Break on McColloch Street

WHEELING — While a Thursday afternoon waterline break near the base of McColloch Street will not affect water service to customers in that section of Wheeling, it did create a bit of a challenge for passing motorists.

City of Wheeling Water Department crews were called to the scene shortly after a 12-inch waterline ruptured beneath a section of sidewalk along McColloch Street below a portion of Interstate 70 near the Wheeling Tunnel.

Public Works Director Russell “Rusty” Jebbia said city crews were able to isolate the break with the closure of two valves so that it did not affect service to customers.

“There is no one out of water,” Jebbia commented. “It’s just a 12-inch main that runs down that way under the interstate.”

Jebbia said crews were expected to begin repairs to the waterline as soon as possible.

Water and debris flowed down a section of McColloch Street before crews had a chance to close the water valves in that area. Many motorists slowly made their way through the large amount of water that accumulated on a section of Peninsula Street as traffic backed-up on the W.Va. 2 off-ramp.

Swank Construction crews were spotted lending assistance to city workers.
