Wheeling Neighborhood Crime Watch Meetings Resuming in July

WHEELING — Informal meetings between local residents and police officers are set to return next month.

Monthly Neighborhood Crime Watch meetings will return to seven locations throughout the city beginning July 5. The program facilitates active participation of local residents in cooperation with law enforcement, where participants discuss crime-related issues and how to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods.

These meetings are very beneficial to police, according to spokesman Philip Stahl, as they allow residents to keep police in the loop about concerns and the state of their neighborhood.

“They keep us in the loop about what people are seeing, experiencing, and what neighbors are saying about activity in their areas,” Stahl said.

He added that the most heavily attended watch group was the one on Wheeling Island, and encouraged people to attend to help communicate their concerns to police to increase the quality of life in their neighborhoods.

“Some crime watch groups are more heavily attended than others, so we always try to encourage people to come, just meet each other, know who’s who, and how we can all work together to make things as safe as possible.”

Originally launched in 1997, Crime Watch meetings were suspended in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier this year, police chief Shawn Shwertfeger hoped to resume meetings in May if COVID numbers improved. A special meeting was held in March for police, residents and city council members to address their concerns following a shooting that month which sent two men to the hospital.

Crime Watch meetings will be held at the following times and locations:
