West Virginia Northern Community College is so excited to start celebrating its 50th anniversary, it’s starting the party nine months early.

Celebrations are scheduled this week on all three of the college’s campuses — Weirton, Wheeling and New Martinsville. Time capsules will be buried at each campus this week as part of Chicken Fest, which honors WVNCC’s mascot, the Thundering Chicken.

“Since I arrived at Northern two years ago, it seems that everyone I meet has their own Northern story about how the college has impacted their family in a positive way,” WVNCC President Daniel Mosser said. “Northern’s 50th anniversary is a great opportunity to pause and reflect on the leaders, students, faculty and staff who have made this college the remarkable community-focused institution that it is today.”

Weirton’s time capsule was buried on campus Monday, while Wheeling’s will be buried at noon today and New Martinsville’s will be buried at noon Wednesday. Items buried will include a newspaper from the day of the time capsule burial, a Northern branded face mask, a current college brochure, a letter from Dr. Mosser and more.

The time capsules will be extracted and opened during the College’s 75th anniversary festivities in 2047.

In addition, the college will produce a series of videos and post them on social media each month from people in the community who have been positively impacted by Northern. the college is planning a 1970s themed costume party on each campus for Halloween celebrations. The campuses also will host a ’70s-themed outdoor movie night in spring 2022, with the movie picked by the community.

WVNCC will be asking the community to help celebrate too, as they deliver a “Party in a Box” that includes party supplies and sweet treats to area businesses and organizations. Anniversary events will culminate with a gala celebration on May 14, 2022. The WVNCC Foundation is also launching a year-long “Heart of Gold” fundraising campaign in conjunction with Northern’s 50th anniversary.

“The community has been so instrumental in our success, we would like to give back and have them take part in our celebration,” added Mosser.

“This is going to be a huge party over the next nine months, and everyone is invited to take part in our celebration.”
