Worker Dies in Accident at Tunnel Ridge Mine in Ohio County

TRIADELPHIA — A miner at the Tunnel Ridge mine in Ohio County was killed in an accident Wednesday, according to Tunnel Ridge general manager Eric Anderson.

In an emailed statement, Anderson said that at around 10 a.m. Wednesday, an employee was fatally injured in an accident involving two pieces of rail mounted mobile equipment located underground. Co-workers brought the injured miner to the surface, where he was declared dead at approximately 12:07 p.m.

The miner’s name had not been released late Wednesday.

Anderson said appropriate state and federal agencies were notified of the accident and investigations by those agencies and Tunnel Ridge continue.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and we ask you to join us in extending support to this miner’s family, friends and co-workers during this difficult time,” Anderson said.

According to information on the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health Safety and Training website, this is the third fatal mining accident in the state this year. There were six fatal accidents reported in the state in 2021.
