Moundsville Native Named CEO Of WVU Athletics’ Gold & Blue Enterprises
Moundsville native Don Robinson is leaving his position as president of MVB Financial Corp. to become the first chief executive officer of the West Virginia University athletic department’s newly formed Gold & Blue Enterprises, the department’s in-house agency handling name, image and likeness subjects for WVU athletes.
The university announced Robinson’s hiring in a Tuesday morning news release. His duties begin September 1.
“After 15 incredibly rewarding years in which we grew and accomplished so much, I thought the time was right to step away from my leadership responsibilities at MVB,” Robinson said. “The new world of college athletics is very intriguing. This is a special opportunity to form a new direction for WVU Athletics and not only make a difference in a young person’s life but position the department for long-term success in the national landscape.”
Robinson comes to West Virginia Athletics from MVB Financial Corp., where he served as its president since 2022. Joining MVB in 2011, he played a pivotal role in transforming the institution from a $350 million bank in North Central West Virginia to a $3 billion bank with nationwide operations.
Before being appointed president in 2022, Robinson previously served as executive vice president, chief financial officer and corporate development officer for MVB Financial and MVB Bank. He also led MVB’s listing on NASDAQ, marking the first for a West Virginia bank in 18 years. In growing MVB, he oversaw more than 15 mergers and acquisitions throughout his tenure to strengthen the corporation’s place in the financial industry.
“We are fortunate to have a person of Don’s energy, leadership and financial expertise be our first Chief Executive Officer of Gold & Blue Enterprises,” WVU Athletic Director Wren Baker said. “We are truly at a critical point for our future, and WVU Athletics means too much to this University and state to not be prominent on the national scene. We have worked diligently to be prepared and ready for the upcoming challenges, and Don is the perfect choice to lead GBE’s mission given his deep knowledge and understanding of commercial business development as well as his passion for WVU.”
As the in-house agency for WVU Athletics, Gold & Blue Enterprises will enhance the student-athlete experience and focus on strategic initiatives that drive a competitive and winning edge in the NIL landscape.
Operating with a private-sector approach, Gold & Blue Enterprises will integrate sales, media, marketing and business operations to drive revenue and support the long-term sustainability and success of WVU Athletics. As GBE’s first CEO, Robinson brings private sector leadership, innovation and financial expertise to the position and is tasked with generating new and diversified revenue streams to fuel WVU Athletics.
Robinson has lived and worked throughout his home state. However, he began his career as an audit manager with Arthur Andersen in Washington, D.C. and later became a partner at the accounting firm of Toothman Rice overseeing audits. Transitioning to the banking industry, he served as a commercial regional manager for Huntington Bank’s West Virginia region before joining MVB.
Robinson received his bachelor’s degree from WVU in business administration and accounting in 1997. In June 2025, WVU appointed him to a six-year term on the Board of Directors of the WVU Alumni Association.
