Eva Belle Reed Catlett, 98 of Follansbee WV died peacefully on Monday, May 13, 2019 at Valley Hospice North in Steubenville, OH.
Born on February 17, 1921 in Colliers, WV a daughter of the late Chill T. and Essie Davis Reed. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Chuck” Catlett, her son, Norman “Buzzy” Catlett and her brother, Joseph E. Reed.
Eva attended Follansbee High School until leaving the school in the fall of 1938 to marry Charles Catlett. In October of 1947, her husband Charles died. A year later facing a challenging future, Eva enrolled at West Liberty State College to study toward a degree in Elementary Education. While engaged in “Student Teaching” in fifth grade at West Liberty Grade School, she faced another tragedy, her oldest son “Buzzy” drowned at a strip-mine pond on May 17, 1950. In the fall of 1951, with a certificate to teach, she was hired as a first-grade teacher at Colliers Elementary School. In 1957 she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education and continued to teach first grade until her retirement in 1987 after 36 years. During her summers she represented World Book Encyclopedia giving many demonstrations to interested parents.
Eva was a life-time member of Cross Creek United Presbyterian Church and an elder, trustee, and choir member for many years along with teaching Sunday School and Bible School. She held the office of Session Clerk for more than 20 years.
She became a member of the W.V. Fidelis Gamma Chapter of the Alpha Delta Kappa International Sorority and held the office of President from 1996-1998. Upon retiring she joined the B.C.A.R.S.E. the Brooke County Association of Retired School Employees, and attended faithfully.
Eva grew up during the depression and learned to live frugally, but enjoyed gardening and writing, especially poems, a few of which that were published. Her most important role was that of mother and grandmother which was her top honor.
She is survived by three loving sons, Gary L. (Carol) Catlett, David W. (Sandi) Catlett both of Follansbee, WV, and Joel R. (Joan) Catlett of Wellsburg, WV; two sisters, Della Chilensky of Beckley, WV and Vera “Jennie” Benoschek of Safford, AZ, a sister-in-law, Betty Reed of Weirton, WV; seven grandchildren, Kim (Lorne) Anderson, Joy (Brian) Kowalsky, Julie (Dave) Harvey, John (Michelle) Catlett, Jennifer (Tim) Pierce, Melissa Catlett, and Rob (Cathy) Catlett, and Saegan Sacripanti whom Eva loved as another granddaughter; 12 great grandchildren, one great great grandson.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 16th from 2-8 p.m., and again on Friday, May 17th from 10 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 11a.m. at the Mulllenbach Funeral Home 669 Main St. Follansbee, WV with the Rev. Frank Lewis officiating.
Interment will follow in St. Johns Cemetery in Colliers, WV.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority Scholarship Fund.
