Michael Angelo Zambito, 72, a lifelong resident of Elm Grove, died Monday, October 7, 2019 in Wheeling Hospital.
He was born February 15, 1947 in Wheeling, the son of the late Angelo and Mary Dato Zambito.
Michael was a retired Assistant Fire Chief for the Wheeling Fire Department for 31 years; a member of the International Association Fire Fighters; Wheeling Fire Fighters Local 12; Professional Fire Fighters WV where he served as Secretary and Treasurer for 20 years and later named Emitius; Elm Grove Eagles; Italian-American Club; American Legion Post #1; a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Wheeling; a member of USS Tutuila ARG-4 Association and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War; Michael was known as an outgoing person who always made time for everyone and everyone was a friend he hadn’t met yet.
In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his daughter Jennifer Knaur and her unborn child.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years Joyce (Brown) Zambito, two sons Christopher Zambito (Heather) of Pittsburgh, PA. and Mark Zambito (Lori) of Columbus, OH.; son-in- law Jonathan Knaur of Columbus OH.; a brother Samuel Zambito of Wheeling; his in-laws Hunter Biddle and Betty Ann Brown of St. Clairsville, OH.; seven grandchildren Joshua, Collin, Andrew, David, Jared, Phoebe and Gavin.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, October 10, 2019 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger Street, Elm Grove, Wheeling.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 11, 2019 at 11 am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Monsignor Paul Hudock as celebrant. Interment to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
