GEORGE FONNER III
George Edward Fonner III, 81, of Wheeling, WV, formerly of Wellsburg, WV, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2020, in Wheeling Hospital.
He was born October 14, 1938, in Wheeling, a son of the late George Edward Fonner Jr. and Leah (Mahan) Fonner.
George was a graduate of Wellsburg High School; a U.S. Army Korean War veteran and a retired construction worker for the Laborers Local Union 1149, Wheeling, where he served as a past president for 18 years. In addition, he was a six- year executive board member for the Laborers Local Retiree Council; a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 344, Wheeling; and a member of the American Legion, Post 34, and Moose Lodge, Wellsburg, WV. He was also an avid fisherman.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis (DeBolt) Fonner, in 2019; a son, Samuel Michael McGee; and a brother, William “Bill” Fonner.
He is survived by his children, James T. (Diana) McGee of Bradenton, FL, Jeffrey Allen (Paula) McGee of Short Creek, WV, Kevin Keith (Cindy) McGee of West Liberty, WV, and Kimberly (Bernie) Breiding of Wheeling; a brother, Robert (Brenda) Fonner of Wellsburg; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2-6 p.m. Friday at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2020, with the Rev. Debra Dague officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling, with full military honors provided by the Moundsville Veterans Honor Guard.
