William E. Maxwell, 90, resident of Wheeling, WV, died Saturday, February 8, 2020, at home.

He was born in Clarksburg, WV, on October 27, 1929, son of the late Charles B. and Imogene Rittenhouse Maxwell.

He graduated in 1947 from Washington Irving High School and 1951 from Marshall University with an Associate Degree in Accounting. He was a retired Vice President, Controller with the former Stone and Thomas Department Store. He was a 50 year member of Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church. He served in the WV National Guard. In his retirement he joined the Ohio Valley Genealogical Society, where he served in various officer positions, as well as a volunteer with the Ohio County Public Library.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Louise Smith Maxwell. Surviving are his five children, William E. “Butch” Maxwell and his wife Vera, Catherine Anne Atwood and her husband Alan, Thomas D. Maxwell, Melissa Sue Hare and her husband Scott, and Charles Robert Maxwell; nine grandchildren, Grace Maxwell Porter, Gillian Maxwell Carter, Alyssa Hare Kocher, Shanna Hare, Sean Hare, Allison Atwood, Corinne Atwood Syfers, Lauren Atwood and Raymond Atwood.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2020, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at Kepner Funeral Home, 900 National Road, Wheeling, WV, 26003, 304-232-2732, where services will be held on Thursday, February 13, 2020, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Erica Harley officiating. Interment to follow in Park View Memorial Gardens.
