On January 14, 2020, beloved Mary Virginia “Mary Ginny” Smereck passed away, aged 69, in Wheeling, WV.

Born in 1950 in Wheeling to Robert and Joan (McCulley) Whitehouse and raised in East Wheeling, she attended Mount de Chantal in middle school and graduated from Central Catholic High School. While a Maroon Knight to her core, Mary Ginny was on the front line fighting the demolition of the Mount.

After attending college in Florida, she married Julius Smereck, Jr., in 1973 and became an Air Force wife, enabling her to realize a lifelong dream of living in Japan.

She worked as a keypuncher, the predecessor to computer programmer, before focusing on raising her kids. She loved her family (of origin and her own) immensely and worshipped her mom.

Mary Ginny was especially fond of children and animals. She supported St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and cried over the plight of the duck-billed platypus. She was empathetic and sensitive, with a huge heart. Mary Ginny had an ever-present, sometimes offbeat sense of humor and joked with everyone. She was a TV aficionado and practically invented memes decades before the Internet with her in-jokes based on pop culture.

She loved to shop and pick out gifts for others. She herself collected snowmen, purses, and office supplies. One of her happiest high school accomplishments was earning her shorthand pins.

Mary Ginny’s life philosophy could be summed up in the Dalai Lama quote “My religion is kindness.” She really did want us all to be nice to one another.

Mary Ginny was preceded in death by her husband Julius, her father Robert, and her sister Bridget Wilson. She is survived by her children Madonna, Dakota, and Nikolai; her mother Joan; her sisters Nancy Bartlett and Jesse Larter; her grandson Elijah; and her cat Baby.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
