EDWARD GEORGE II

Edward M. (Ned) George, II, 84, of Wheeling, passed away at Liza’s Place on April 11, 2021. He was born on August 8, 1936, in Steubenville, Ohio, the son of the late Edward M. George and Katherine Sherrard Wickersham George. He was a great-grandson of two prominent bankers in the upper Ohio Valley: Samuel George, founder of the Wellsburg Banking & Trust Co. (now Community Bank) and Robert Sherrard, a co-founder of the former National Exchange Bank of Steubenville (now Chase Bank).

Mr. George was a graduate of Wellsburg High School in 1954 and from Washington & Lee University, Lexington, Virginia, in 1958 with B.S. Degree in Commerce with a major in Business Administration. He was a member of the Alpha Chapter of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity.

He was employed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland as a bank examiner in 1966. In 1973, he was named a Vice President of Half Dollar Trust & Savings Bank (now United Bank). In 1981, he was elected President and CEO of Wellsburg National Bank (now WesBanco) and remained there until 1983 when he commenced employment with Wheeling Dollar Savings & Trust Co. (now WesBanco). While at WesBanco, he served in various positions: Vice President, Senior Vice President, and Executive Vice President, and was elected President & CEO on January 1, 1993. He retired on August 8, 2001. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 1991 and served in that capacity until 2009. During his tenure on the Board, he served as Vice Chairman and Chairman at various times. He was a member of Wes- Banco’s Executive Loan Committee until October 1, 2017. In addition, he has served as Trustee of the Jane W. Brooks Charitable Trust and as an advisor to the George W. Bowers Family Charitable Trust, both of which are administered by WesBanco Trust & Investment Services.

Mr. George was a former member of the State of West Virginia Banking & Financial Institutions Board; a former member of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland’s Small Bank Advisory Council, and was a long-time Board member and former Chairman of the West Virginia Bankers Association. In 1998, he was honored as the West Virginia “Banker of the Year” by the Association.

He was a former Trustee of Bethany College, Ohio Valley Health Services & Education Corp., and Wheeling Country Day School. He was a former Director of the Fort Henry Club of Wheeling and the S. George Co. of Wells- burg. He was a former Director and Chairman of the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce and the Ohio Valley Industrial & Business Development Corporation (now RED). He was a member of the Ohio Valley Seniors Golf Association and a member and former President of the Wheeling Country Club. He was also a former member of the Williams Country Club, Weirton, West Virginia, where he achieved two holes-in-one on No. 8, sixteen years apart. He was an avid golfer who played on the Old Course at St. Andrews, and Carnoustie in Scotland, Pebble Beach, Oakmont, Firestone, and many times at the Greenbrier. Mr. George was a member of Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Sandra Fervier George, and their three sons: Edward M. (Ned) George, III (Renee) and David A. George of Wheeling, and Commander Thomas F. George (Kyong), U.S. Navy (retired) of Richmond, VA; four grand- children: Mason Alexander George of Pittsburgh, PA, Grace Elizabeth George and Lily Katherine George both of Wheeling, and Jackson Chong George of Richmond, VA; a brother, John (Beverly) Sherrard George of Wells- burg; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at Kepner Funeral Home, 900 National Road, Wheeling, WV 26003 on Friday, April 16, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church at 905 National Road, Wheeling, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 17, 2021, with Rev. Erica Harley officiating. Entombment will be held at the convenience of the family at the Sherrard Family Mausoleum, Union Cemetery, Steubenville, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Valley Hospice, 308 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, WV 26003.
