Betty Marie Starkey Shackelford, 88, of Triadelphia, W.Va., passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 2, 2021, at her home.

She was born Dec. 21, 1932, in Benwood, W.Va., daughter of the late Russell and Virginia McDiffitt Starkey.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard L. Shackelford, Sr., on April 20, 2021; a grandson, Andrew Winkler; a son-in-law, Larry Ennis; and her siblings, Glen, Jim, Wayne, Willowdene “Bill”, Hazel, and Louise.

Betty graduated from Union Local High School. She was a past Executive Secretary at Wheeling Jesuit University for Father Burke and past president of the Wheeling Junior Women’s Club, where she would help organize roller skating with orphans and the Christmas parade floats.

She was a shorthand whiz and typing queen. Betty was also a member of Edgwood Lutheran Church.

Betty is survived by her four children, Dr. Howard L. (Joyce) Shackelford, Jr., Terry L. (Dr. Robert) George, Deborah K. (Gregory) Sgroi, and Shawna M. Winkler; 9 grandchildren, Jeff, Stacy, Nathaniel, Ginny, Becky, Martin, Jodi, Derek and Jon; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. at Kepner Funeral Home, 166 Kruger St., Wheeling, W.Va., (304-242-2311) with Pastor Timothy Spence officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
