Melvin Franklin “Mitch” Mitchell, 85, of McMechen, WV passed away on Friday, January 28, 2022 at his home.

He was born in 1936 in Sistersville, WV, son of the late Thomas and Mildred (Myers) Mitchell.

Melvin retired from Weirton Construction where he was a heavy equipment operator for over 30 years. During this period, he operated an impressive drag line crane with a 36 cubic yard bucket. He was very proud of his skills with this equipment and his seniority at the mine.

From 1954 until 1957, he was a Corporal in the U.S. Army serving in Korea as well as Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sisters, Helen Mitchell, Mary McConnel (Bob), Jane Bowers (Ed), Martha Hannah (Albert), Carolyn Beatson (Stewart) and a brother Thomas Mitchell.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Diana (Connor) Mitchell, three sons, Craig Mitchell of Norfolk, VA, Brett Mitchell of Dublin, OH and retired Navy Commander Chad (Gretchen) Mitchell of Hagerstown, MD. His closest friend throughout his entire life was his brother, retired Major, USAR, Norris “Pete” (Sylvia) Mitchell of St. Clairsville, OH; and he cherished every moment he had with his five grandsons: Jacob, Benjamin, Samuel, Maxwell and Harrison Mitchell, as well as several nieces and nephews. Many friends will particularly re- member how “Mitch” enjoyed canoeing and boating on the Ohio River.

There will be no viewing, however, a private memorial service for close friends and family will be held at Nana’s Landing in Glen Dale from 2-4pm on Saturday, February 5th.
