Beallsville High School

Beallsville Not Fazed by Small Roster

BEALLSVILLE – A small roster is something that has become the norm with Beallsville High football. This season will be no different as the Blue Devils will suit up only 17 gridders.

Former Beallsville High athletic great Rusty Bondy begins his second season guiding his alma mater. His junior-dominated squad includes just one senior.

Despite a lack of numbers, Bondy remains positive and upbeat about the upcoming campaign as well as the program’s future.

“I am pretty optimistic about this season. The numbers are not where they need to be but we have become accustomed to that,” Bondy said. “But this group has worked very hard and is very enthusiastic. We also have no bad attitudes to deal with, which is big.

“The numbers should start trending upward next year. We have 14 players on our junior high team,” he added. “Our youth program also has good numbers. So, things are definitely looking up.”

The Blue Devils are coming off a 2-7 campaign, as one game fell victim to Covid.

The lone Blue Devil senior is a dandy. Gage Perkins (5-11, 245) will return as a starter on both lines and will likely be in line for many post-season accolades.

“Gage is one excellent football player. He has the ability to dominate on both sides of the ball. He means a lot to this program,” Bondy said.

The Blue Devils will run a diversified offense, utilizing both the spread and a pro-set.

Garrett Perkins (6-2,185) will be the quarterback, and a very good one.

“Garrett has put in a lot of hard work. He is really dedicated to having a big season,” Bondy said. “His arm strength has really improved as has his footwork. Garrett is primed for a productive season.”

James Palmer (5-10, 140) is the Bondy’s tailback. The junior letterman boasts big-play capabilities.

“I am expecting nice things from James this year. He is a big key to our running game,” Bondy noted.

Junior Conner Hagan (5-10,175) will line up in front of Palmer at the fullback slot. Bondy says Hagan has “been a pleasant surprise.”

Running back depth comes in the form of junior Reed Smith (5-9, 135) and sophomore Bradlyann Pittman (5-10,145).

Junior Marky Louden (6-2,185) will start at tight end.

“I am very proud of Marky. He has transformed his body,” Bondy said. “He used to weigh about 275 pounds. But he has bought into the weight room and pushed himself hard to get to where he is at. He has nice hands and good speed.”

Smith, when not needed at running back, will be one of the starting wideouts. He will be joined by junior Thorn Stofell (6-1,165), a first-time performer.

“Thorn is a newcomer. He is a great athlete with good speed,” Bondy offered.

Junior Matt Stonebreaker (5-10, 140) will also see extensive time at wideout as will classmate Colton Shriver (6-1, 195) while freshman Ryan Dornon (5-10,130) supplies additional depth.

Gage Perkins will be the foundation of the offensive line, manning one of the guard slots. The tackles will be sophomore Dalton Fulton (6-1,235) and junior Brandon Necessary (5-11,215).

A pair of sophomores are battling for the other starting guard spot opposite Perkins. They are Anthony Dunn (5-9,170) and Joe Osborne (5-8,140).

Sophomore Kyler Graham (5-9,165) will be the Blue Devils’ center. Freshman Blake Johnson (5-10,200) will provide depth across the offensive front.

Bondy is stepping back to the Beallsville glory days when he sets his defense. The Blue Devils’ stop troops will have a 5-2 monster look to it.

“We ran that defense when I was in school here. We went 10-0 using it. So I know it can work,” Bondy said.

Loudon and Shriver will be the defensive ends while Gage Perkins and Fulton will man the tackle slots. Johnson will serve as their backup.

Pittman is the nose guard.

Hagan and Stonebreaker will handle the second line of defense at linebacker.

Palmer will move into the role of monster. Garrett Perkins and Stofell are the starting corners while Smith will roam the deep zones at safety.

The Blue Devils have scrimmaged Belpre and Tusky Catholic. Bondy’s boys will make their regular-season debut Friday, hosting Millersport.

Bondy’s coaching staff includes offensive coordinator John Yocum, a former Blue Devil quarterbacking star for Dave Caldwell, defensive coordinator Dave Wiles, Rusty Lucas, Rodney Snyder, Skyler Bondy Tyler Davis, Mansel McFederick.
