Gun Bans Futile Against Terrorists
Weeks after the massacre in Orlando, Fla., and even as Americans were celebrating their liberties, President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and other liberals continued to pound the drums for more gun control laws.
They insist that banning “weapons of war” would prevent mass murder such as that committed by the Florida killer who identified himself with the Islamic State.
Such laws would do no good. They are supported by people with little or no familiarity with firearms, only passing interest in history and, to be blunt, a hope that most Americans are not paying attention to current events.
∫ European nations, including France, have severe restrictions on firearms ownership. For example, guns with magazines holding more than three cartridges are banned except with special permits. So are semi-automatic weapons that resemble military versions capable of automatic fire –the “assault rifles” Obama, Clinton and company want to ban.
∫ Those limits did not prevent terrorists from using banned firearms to slaughter 11 people at the Charlie Hebdo office in Paris, on Jan. 7, 2015. They did not stop other Islamic terrorists from carrying out the Paris massacre last November, in which 130 people were killed and 368 were wounded.
∫ Any number of firearms not covered by the “assault rifle” proposal are just as deadly.
∫ Even a complete ban on sales of all guns in the United States would not keep firearms out of the hands of terrorists or even criminals. Americans own an estimated 300 million pistols, rifles and shotguns. They are in at least one-third of U.S. households. Anyone desiring to obtain one would have no trouble in stealing all he wanted — or buying them on the black market.
∫ Some of the worst mass killings in history — including recent history — have used bombs, not guns.
Clinton has been accused of wanting to scrap the Second Amendment entirely. She understands that is not possible — but with Obama and his executive orders as her model, she certainly would do as much as she could to keep guns out of even law-abiding Americans’ hands.
It has been said that if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. In view of the current scare tactic being used by the liberals, perhaps it should be amended to this: If Americans fall prey to unreasonable terror about firearms, only terrorists will have guns.
