Don’t Give Up On Health Care Bill
How long and how many tries did it take ultra-liberals to achieve what they planned to be a government takeover of the health insurance industry? Many years, accompanied by several false starts.
Americans disappointed at defeat of a plan to repeal and replace Obamacare should keep that in mind. In particular, President Donald Trump and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan should refuse to allow last week’s collapse to deter them from trying again.
Obamacare was not an innovation by former President Barack Obama’s administration. A blueprint for the program was drawn up during President Bill Clinton’s tenure, by then-first lady Hillary Clinton. It, too, collapsed, then lay dormant during President George W. Bush’s administration. Only once Obama took office, with a Congress dominated by fellow Democrats, was the law bearing Obama’s name enacted.
Health care really is a complex issue. Getting repeal and replacement right is much more difficult than was enacting Obamacare. Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Trump should keep trying.
