Being Safe During Fall, Winter Months

After months in which the bedtime drill was to ensure the air conditioning was set for comfortable sleeping, the fall/winter heating season is upon us. Already, local residents have received a sharp reminder of the need to take precautions to keep our families safe.

On Saturday, two pipeline workers living in a camping trailer in Moundsville were lucky to escape injury when a propane tank exploded. Precisely what went wrong has not been determined.

Heating equipment — regardless of what fuels it — needs to be checked for safety when it is used after months of inactivity. A few minutes doing that — or, if you are uncertain, calling in an expert — can be the difference between a toasty warm home and a disaster.

This week we published a reminder from fire safety officials about installing and maintaining smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. That, too, is a precaution that can save lives at all times of the year.

Conveniences that make our lives easier and more comfortable often are taken for granted, simply because they work so well most of the time. Don’t ignore the potential for danger, we beg of you. Spend a few minutes to ensure you and yours are safe.
