Eastern Gateway Worth Celebrating
Tens of thousands of Ohio Valley residents have reason to join in a celebration occurring this week in Steubenville. A variety of festivities are scheduled in recognition of the 50th anniversary of Eastern Gateway Community College.
In the beginning, it was Jefferson Technical College, with limited offerings and just 320 students. But JTC had a winning formula of two-year degree programs giving graduates foundations for successful careers — without the financial burdens of going away to school at four-year institutions of higher learning.
Since then, success has meant growth that probably would have impressed the community leaders who founded the college, which opened its doors on Sept. 23, 1968.
The institution transitioned, first becoming Jefferson Community College, then EGCC. At the same time, new and different vocational programs were established. With the new name, in 2009, also came expansion to serve students at an additional campus facility, in Youngstown.
And in addition to career-oriented offerings, the college became more appealing to students seeking non-traditional pathways to four-year degrees. It is possible now for high school students to earn associate degrees at EGCC before earning their diplomas.
Community and technical colleges always have filled an important niche in higher education. Now, with the cost of baccalaureate degrees soaring, they are more attractive than ever.
We in the Ohio Valley are blessed to enjoy a diverse higher education community. Congratulations to EGCC for half a century of being an important — nay, a vital — part of the network.
