Renew Harrison Library Funding
Libraries are not just books and periodicals anymore. They provide a variety of other services, ranging from internet access to children’s story hours. They are as indispensable as they were before the electronic age.
For years, residents of Harrison County have recognized that by supporting property tax levies that help fund the Puskarich Public Library, in Cadiz. The library has branches in Scio and Freeport.
About 45 percent of the library’s funding comes from the levy, which costs most property owners just pennies a week.
The levy will be up for renewal on the Nov. 6 election ballot.
To their credit, even as costs are increasing for just about everything, library officials are seeking renewal of the levy only at its current 1-mill rate.
An idea of the library’s importance an be gained through a couple of statistics: First, during an average month, the main library and its two branches see more than 11,000 items checked out.
Second, library programs were attended by 13,338 people last year.
Libraries often are taken for granted. Let us hope that is not the situation in Harrison County. Voters there should agree on Nov. 6 to renew the levy.
