Helping to Rebuild Once-Broken Lives
When state Senate Majority Leader Ryan Ferns, R-Ohio, attended a White House conference on drug abuse last week, he clued attendees from throughout the nation in on the cold new idea for helping former addicts.
Ferns told those at the conference about a program at the Ziegenfelder Co. in Wheeling. The firm is a very successful mass producer of frozen confections, including the Budget Saver Twin Pop.
Ziegenfelder has made a commitment to hiring former drug addicts and helping them recover. As Ferns noted, many of them are “loyal, eager to work and thankful” to the firm.
More such initiatives are needed as part of a comprehensive attack on substance dependence. They can help rebuild once-broken lives — and there certainly are plenty of those.
Let’s hope it catches on.
