WPHS Speech Team Keeps the Run Going
Think about this: There may be speech teachers in West Virginia who began their careers after the Wheeling Park High School Speech Team won its first state championship, are preparing now for retirement and have never seen WPHS lose at the state Speech and Debate Tournament.
When the current WPHS team won the state championship Saturday in Huntington, it kept alive a 40-year string of titles.
Among our pleasures at the newspaper is congratulating young people when they do good things. It is a true delight when a local student or team wins big at the state level.
But this is different. This is excellence and achievement of the very highest order. It is, in a word, amazing.
Congratulations to team members and coaches Bill Cornforth, Kayla Nelson, Isabella Droginske and Brigitte Mazure — and to Fran Schoolcraft, who led the team during its first 25 state championships.
Right now, we West Virginians are talking about ways to improve public schools. One wonders what tips could be picked up from the WPHS Speech Team.
