Pats on the Back

n To the many local organizations and churches with initiatives to help the less fortunate during the Easter season. Among the largest is the annual Easter Food Basket Giveaway by Bethlehem Apostolic Temple in Wheeling. The church handed out hundreds of baskets on Saturday.

n To two local high school seniors who were named winners of National Merit Scholarships last week. They are Ashley Linder, of Wheeling Park High School, the daughter of Paul and Jennifer Linder of Wheeling; and Austin Williams of John Marshall High School, the son of Ed and Rebecca Williams of Moundsville.

n To Moundsville Middle School seventh-grader Tricia Ward, who didn’t want some of her classmates to feel bad about the clothes they had to wear to school. She organized a campaign to collect nice clothes and shoes for a school Clothes Closet. Ward’s project also will benefit children who do not attend the school. And, noting that parents often sacrifice to get the best they can afford for their children, she is collecting items for adults, too. They are being given to Appalachian Outreach Inc.

n To Robert “Bob” Lally of Wheeling, who noticed a plaque placed on a stone bridge in the city had deteriorated since the span was completed in 1891. Lally paid $85 out of his own pocket to have the plaque cleaned and polished.
