Whistleblowers Merit Protection

Whistleblowers — people who report wrongdoing in either the public or private sectors to the authorities — deserve protection from retaliation. But in Ohio, a 2013 Franklin County Court of Appeals ruling is viewed by many as having weakened such safeguards.

A bill introduced in the state House of Representatives by Reps. Jack Cera, D-Bellaire, and Gary Scherer, R-Circleville, would reinforce bans against retaliation. The measure is HB 238.

Clearly, disgruntled employees who allege wrongdoing falsely, in order to harm employers, should not be protected. But HB 238 is aimed at whistleblowers with legitimate, provable concerns.

No one should ever be afraid of retaliation for reporting behavior that is criminal or is aimed at circumventing rules intended to safeguard worker safety. The Cera-Scherer bill ough to be enacted by Ohio lawmakers.
