Enforce Burning Ban

It probably has not escaped your notice that our area has not had much rain lately. The outdoors are as dry as a tinder box — and that invites brush and even forest fires.

On Friday, Gov. Jim Justice ordered a ban on most outdoor burning in the state. He hopes to lessen the danger of outdoor burning becoming wildfires.

Here in our area, major forest fires have never been a problem. But even brush fires can threaten homes and, on occasion, do.

We encourage area residents to comply with the governor’s order, then. A backyard cookout may be fine — but deciding now is a good time to burn a pile of brush is not. Use your common sense.

Both local and state law enforcement officers should enforce the ban, of course, at least until we get some rain to lessen the danger of a dangerous wildfire.
