Time Is of Essence To Protect Bridge
A survey conducted by the Friends of Wheeling preservation group makes the need for quick action to protect the historic Suspension Bridge clear.
As we reported, five people from the group watched the bridge for four hours one day. They saw 707 vehicles pass over it.
Of that number 141 cars and trucks were heavier than the bridge’s 2-ton weight limit.
State Division of Highways officials have a plan to erect heavy barriers to keep overweight vehicles off the bridge. That work needs to be done as soon as possible.
As Friends of Wheeling President Jeanne Finstein noted, continuous police presence at the bridge is not feasible. But, she added, a few tickets for ignoring the span’s posted weight limits may help. Wheeling police should try that.
The bridge is a national treasure. It simply must be protected.
