Registering New Voters in W.Va.
We West Virginians have set a new record — for the highest number of people registering to vote in a single month. Secretary of State Mac Warner reports 8,020 people registered during September.
That brought the total number of Mountain State registered voters to 1,220,305, according to Warner’s office.
As the state’s chief elections officer, Warner, who assumed the post in 2017, worked with officials in all 55 counties to clean up voter rolls. Dead people, those who had moved and others not eligible to vote for various reasons were removed from the lists. Warner knew that, as a Republican, that would open him to claims of “voter suppression.”
What he has done is exactly the opposite. More than 150,000 people have registered to vote since he took office.
Good for him and county election officials.
