Remembering Our ‘Doughboys’
As we reported during the weekend, the “Spirit of the American Doughboy” statue that has stood in Wheeling Park since 1931 has been removed to be repaired. Natural wear and occasional vandalism has taken a toll on it.
The last veteran of World War I died a few years ago. Why is it important to make the effort to repair and replace the statue honoring those who served during “the Great War?”
Simply because we will feel grateful to them forever — and because veterans alive today ought to be reminded honoring them will never go out of style.
All involved in the “Doughboy” restoration project are to be commended and thanked. We look forward to his return and to a rededication ceremony being planned for next Memorial Day.
