Ensure Voting System Is Secure

Use of a mobile phone “app” to allow disabled West Virginians to vote without going to polling places sounds like a great idea. But, given the publicity over attempts by foreign countries to “hack” electronic voting systems in the United States, a cautious approach to the plan is understandable.

Secretary of State Mac Warner’s office already has pioneered use of the app, by military personnel stationed overseas. The trial seemed to go off without a hitch.

But in discussing use of the system by disabled voters this week, some legislators worried aloud about security. An investigation of an attempt to hack into the mobile voting system is underway by federal authorities under U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart, who serves the southern half of the state.

Lawmakers should seek more information on security. Absent some compelling concern, however, they should allow use of the procedure by disabled voters.
