Trimming High Court’s Budget
Mention $32,000 couches, and the five members of the West Virginia Supreme Court are likely to wince. Good. Irresponsible spending — by, it should be noted, some of their predecessors, not them — was allowed for too long on the state’s highest court.
But the current justices have been eager to turn over a new leaf. That was evident this week, when Chief Justice Tim Armstead presented the court’s budget request for the coming year. It is for $135.5 million — $4 million less than the court budget five years ago.
If that still seems a lot, remember that it covers operation of all courts, excluding municipal and federal ones, in the state.
Recognize, too, that the drug abuse crisis has been an enormous expense for the courts. Good for the justices for finding ways to trim spending.
