Honoring Real Hero
It was not enough for West Virginian Hershel “Woody” Williams to save lives at the risk of his own during World War II. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
But for several years, Williams has been spearheading another campaign — to honor the Gold Star families who have sacrificed loved ones in the armed forces. Williams’ foundation is behind about 60 Gold Star Monuments, including some in our area. Another 70 are planned, throughout the country.
Now, a group of U.S. senators including Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., are asking President Donald Trump to award the Medal of Freedom to Williams. There should be no delay in doing so. We can think of no one more deserving.
