Dancing the Night Away — or Not

For many high school juniors and seniors, the annual prom is a really big deal. Needless to say, it was not this year.

Officials in the Toronto school district are discussing whether the young men and women can still have their big evening.

During their meeting last week, Toronto Board of Education members were told by school Superintendent Maureen Taggart that some interest has been expressed in a mid-summer prom. “Everyone voted in favor of it,” she said of Toronto High School junior- and senior-class officers who were asked about the idea.

Whether such an event can be held depends on a number of things, of course. No doubt the resourceful Toronto community could get the arrangements made — but there still is concern about the coronavirus.

If public health officials say the proposal can be implemented safely, fine. It should go forward. But if there is a danger of a prom creating an upsurge in COVID-19 cases, the idea should be dismissed.
