Officer’s Firing Was Unavoidable
Tim Starkey had been a Martins Ferry police officer since 2004. That makes it appear he did a good job in the position.
But on Wednesday, he was fired — for a single error in judgment.
Municipal officials explained Starkey had shared an “inappropriate” social media post regarding the Black Lives Matter movement. It was a crude, childish comment on BLM.
Because such postings seem to become widespread public knowledge at the speed of light, this one would have adversely affected Starkey’s ability to work with members of minorities.
In addition, his continued employment would have reflected badly — and inaccurately — on municipal government. Under the circumstances, then, Martins Ferry officials had no reasonable option but to terminate Starkey’s employment.
