Deputies Better Than Hired Guards

Acting Brooke County Sheriff Scott Adams probably was not telling anyone anything they did not know already when he discussed the ongoing dispute between the county commission and the board of education, over how to pay for sheriff’s deputies serving as resource officers at schools.

After they and commissioners failed to come to an agreement on the matter, school officials hired security guards from a private firm. They are no substitute for trained sheriff’s deputies as resource officers, Adams told county commissioners.

That seems obvious. While the private guards may be better than no security at all in Brooke County schools, their usefulness falls far short of that provided by deputies as resource officers.

“He’s not the only one frustrated right now,” said school Superintendent Jeffrey Crook in response to Adams. ” I am, too.” So are lots of other people. School officials and commissioners needed to continue trying to find a solution to the problem.
